Health and Social Determinants of Health
The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is jointly sponsored by the Department of Sociology and the BC-Centre for Excellence (BC-CfE) in HIV/AIDS. The successful scholar will be an assistant professor in Sociology (a top ranked Department in Canada) and a Research Scientist at the BC-CfE (among the world’s foremost HIV/AIDS research centres).
The successful candidate must be eligible, and able to apply, for a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award (see details at http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca). The eligibility criteria in this case include, but are not limited to, having a doctorate in sociology and holding peer reviewed operating research funds prior to the commencement of the award.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated teaching and research expertise in the sociology of health and medicine and the social determinants of health, with specialization in the areas of HIV/AIDS, substance use, socio-economic vulnerability, and the labour market. Applicants must have completed their doctorate by the starting date of the appointment. Applicants will demonstrate a record of excellent research, publication, and teaching, as well as a record of, or clear potential for, curriculum development and student supervision. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, teaching, graduate supervision, and service. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The appointment is to begin on 1 July 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter, and is subject to final budgetary approval and contingent on success in the CIHR New Investigator Award competition.
