I got a rejection within 3 months or so, but with helpful reviews and some suggestions from the editor. They are very strict about the word limit so that's something to keep in mind.

So this journal seems to have a weird submission policy. I was perusing their website, and noticed they won't publish anything already published, which is pretty normal. Except that they state that this means anything that has an ISBN number. Guess what's got an ISBN number? My whole freaking dissertation that is on ProQuest.
Am I worrying for nothing here or does this mean the whole thing is off limits?
Thanks
Manuscripts will be considered for Sociology only if they have not already been published, and are not currently under consideration for publication, elsewhere. Manuscripts should not contain substantial elements of material published or accepted for publication elsewhere. If an article has an ISBN or ISSN number it is considered to have been published, regardless of where it has been published.

most people need to do SUBSTANTIAL revision of dissertation chapters before they're anywhere close to ready to submit for journal review, so it's largely moot. but in general, yes, this is one of those things that ABDs and their advisers should be talking about before filing.

A lot of journals have clear policies on this. As suggested in the previous post, you would probably need to revise/reformat your diss chapter for publication anyway, and doing so may be enough to get around the issue since they wouldn't be "the same." And if that's not the case, they can tell you upfront so you can find another journal.

also ask for an embargo, petition the graduate school that students can request two to three years before the dissertation is put into ProQuest
