Okay. So this is year three on the market for me. The first year I ended up getting a fellowship at my school instead of a job. Year two I defended at the end of the spring and landed a temporary position. Now I'm on the market with a phd in hand. I'm guessing my situation is fairly common and that lots of new phds in visiting positions are on the market this year, as well. For those of you in the same situation, how are you feeling about your chances in this year's market? How much of a difference does having some professional experience and a phd in hand really make?

I'm on the market for the second time and I have no idea what to expect. I have a VAP but my vita hasn't changed dramatically since last year except that I have PhD now. I had a few interviews last year but no offers so I can only hope that I will get a few interviews again this year (and 1 offer!!).
The only thing I can say is that the two positions I did not get offered last year when to people with PhDs and post-doc experience. Also, at my PhD institution, the person we hired was a post-doc.
Honestly, I'm clueless though about what will happen but can only hope for the best!

This is my 2nd time on the market. I just received my PhD in August; I was ABD last time around.
As an ABD, I made a few short lists, but no interviews. I'm hoping to land a job, obviously, but don't really know what to expect. Not landing a job last year was a bit of a blow - my department felt I had a very strong shot based on my CV.
This time around, the stakes are a bit higher - my first child was born ten days after I defended my dissertation.
