Two questions:
1) Can any share general experiences with the journal- editors, reviewers, turn-around time etc?
2) How prestigious is this in American sociology? Has a very high impact factor (higher than Social Problems and Social Forces) but I've never heard it listed along with the other 'top tier' journals.
Thanks for any information in advance.

Politics & Society was formed in the 1960s with a new Left orientation and organization. Last time I looked, the articles are reviewed by a collective of editors rather than single blind reviewers. I sometimes read the papers, but the papers are not as empirical as I like. Evidence is often used more like a supportive role rather than guiding the paper.

My impression of the journal is that it is more widely read in political science than in sociology. So it may not be a good choice unless you're a political sociologist, and even then...

The journal is very well regarded. A key areas for debates about politics for both sociologists and political scientists. A no, it is not just some left wing thing - the editors and the contributors are typically top scholars in their fields.

Dear Great Journal,
Why so dismissive about left politics? Left politics do not go with "great sociology?" Rigor and progressive politics often go together in this profession called sociology.
If you read between the lines, this is a Marxist journal. From the journal's webpage: "Established in the late 1960s as an alternative, critical voice of the social sciences, PAS regularly debates the theory of the state, class analysis, politics of gender, methodological individualism and rational choice, and the future of capitalism and socialism."

I am not dismissive about left politics - in fact, I am a full on commie. I was just saying that this is a mainstream journal. Not a space for obscure Marxist sectariana, which is the impression "smash da state" gave. That's all.

I submitted to P&S with a review time of slightly more than 5 months. They have a peculiar system that can make times vary significantly depending on when you submit. A group of the editors first reads the paper, and if it passes, the whole board reads it and discusses it in meetings they have every four months. So if you send in the right time, you waiting time could be much shorter.
I received a rejection, but most of the critiques were right and helpful for submitting elsewhere.

Be sure to read their FAQ if you submit. Their board meets only 4 times a year, and discusses in each meeting manuscripts submitted up to 1 month beforehand. So time to decision could be only a few weeks or it could also be 3-4 months. If they reject it outright they do so fairly quick.
My paper was rejected outright without much explanation within two weeks of submission.

I read the journal description which discusses Marx but a glance at the editorial board does not scream Marxist. And a cursory look at the bibliographies of recent articles, Marx is not cited. I'm wondering how Marxist it is. I am interested in submitting an article that's interdisciplinary but not Marxist in bent.

You need to tell us more about your paper before anybody can offer any advice.

I would hardly call a journal where mainstream political scientists like Hacker and Pierson contribute Marxist. While there is one notable Marxist on the board, Erik Olin Wright, it is diverse and their output shows that. P&S is a great journal but it is also a very mainstream journal.
