The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Inequality / Social Policy at the rank of Assistant Professor. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching and research interests in various forms of social inequality (e.g., poverty, social class, race/racism, gender, sexuality, citizenship) and who emphasize the social policy implications of their research. Ability to teach social research methods and/or social statistics would be an asset. The successful applicant should hold a PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline or be close to completion. Salary will be commensurate with rank and experience. The position includes a full range of benefits and has a preferred starting date of July 1, 2012.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a research profile commensurate with employment in a research-intensive university and a highly-regarded Sociology Department. The ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate students, and to supervise MA and PhD students is essential. Our department has 28 full-time continuing faculty members, 7.5 permanent administrative staff, and approximately 500 undergraduate majors and 90 graduate students (about 25 MA and 65 PhD). More than 7000 students register annually for Sociology classes. Most faculty members and graduate students work within three broad areas: social structure and social policy; social theory and cultural studies, and criminology and socio-legal studies. More than half of full-time faculty members currently hold major research grants. We take pride in our reputation as one of the most diverse and inter-disciplinary Sociology departments in Canada.
