The Department of Sociology & Rural Studies invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin fall 2013. It seeks a colleague, whose duties will include teaching research methods and Criminal Justice courses, maintaining an active, independent research agenda that includes peer-reviewed publications, and service to the department. The department actively seeks to increase social and intellectual diversity among its faculty. Women and persons underrepresented in higher education are especially encouraged to apply.
Date of Appointment: August 22, 2013.
Responsibilities: Classroom instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels; undergraduate and graduate advising; research/scholarship; and, service. The successful applicant will teach courses in research methods and Criminal Justice. Applicants should be able to teach Criminal Justice and Sociology courses dealing with deviance, law enforcement, corrections, and the law. The maximum teaching load is three courses per semester.
Minimum Qualifications: By the date of appointment, the candidate must have earned a PhD in Sociology, Criminology, or Criminal Justice. He or she must also have demonstrated teaching skills (or potential) in the areas indicated, effective interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to advise masters and PhD students on theses and dissertations, and the ability to contribute to both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.
Desired Qualifications: Graduate coursework in Criminology and Criminal Justice
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience.

The academic program includes an undergraduate major in Sociology and minors in Sociology and Criminal Justice at its Brookings and Sioux Falls campuses, plus specializations in Human Services, Human Resources, and Teaching. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota a community of approximately 22,000 persons on the Eastern border of the state. The city has an excellent K-12 educational system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and there are numerous lakes and parks within the area. Sioux Falls, a city of nearly 150,000 persons, is an easy one-hour drive from Brookings.
