This definitely fits in the "random question" category. Why do so many departments do electronic or email applications now?
Also, do they print off everything that everyone sends, print off some at first and more later, or just read everything on a computer screen?

At least in my institution, it is because it is much, much easier to deal with the electronic applications.
It is not uncommon for even middle of the road places to get 100+ applications now. Photocopying, filing, etc can be a major hassle.
And at least in my institution, faculty can print if they like, but materials are not printed as a matter of policy. The materials are all named and stored on a restricted share drive that only the members of the committee can access. Much simpler and easier to deal with, on top of everything being indexed and easily searchable.

At my institution, we request electronic submissions, and typically read pretty much all of the materials online.
Which brings me to the more important point: PLEASE submit .pdfs when you are emailing/submitting via the internet. It takes longer to open/read/convert other types of files, and sometimes your formatting gets messed up (but won't in a .pdf file).
And good luck with your searches!
