My name was posted on this thread before I received my contract in the mail. So, if you know someone personally who was offered a position, it might not be a bad idea to clear it with them first.

If you are excited about your friend's offer and don't know if he'd be comfortable with you spreading the word go take him out for drinks instead.

If you had actually read the previous posting you would know that these comments are in reference to a specific candidate who just so happens to be a male.
Please try and contextualize the postings on the board before posting your knee-jerk reactions.....

It is kind of scary to post people's names right away because some issues may be still happening before the jobs are a done deal. I am thinking it would be a better idea to wait longer, like a couple of months before posting the names on this board.

If someone officially accepts a job, it is public knowledge. At that point, a department sends an email to faculty, grad students, and sometimes alumni. All this board is doing is collecting that public information and putting it in one easy-to-access place. In fact, the only reason I come to this site is to check how the field is shaping up for the year. I don't understand people's hand-wringing over this issue. If you are not ready for your job acceptance to become public knowledge, then don't sign the contract and send it back in.

Let's stop discussing this and derailing the thread. There are two options:
1) The information is public but the candidate is not happy about it being announced here (e.g. current TT AP at another department). 2) The information is public and the candidate has no issues.
Either way, post contract-signing, the information is usually publicly announced. As El-D noted above, if the candidate is uncomfortable, s/he can get the name removed. It may be easy to ask friends to be circumspect about announcing, but you cannot limit the grad student body and others at the incoming institution.

I think the point, though, is that folks' names sometimes get listed before the contract is officially sent in. Once that happens, all bets are off. But sometime folks jump the gun, e.g. when candidates are about to sign, but haven't yet done so officially (or told other schools the official "no").

Look, clearly there are good reasons not to share information before it's official.
I like seeing how positions are filled, and learning the kinds of things that might make me more competitive next year.
So, can we please get back to sharing information that is ready to be shared? All of you with accepted offers, would you mind?

What about Michigan, Princeton, UCLA?
Perhaps the others haven't been accepted, but I thought UCLA was - who's going to spill the beans?
