Any experiences with this journal?

Great journal but I've had a manuscript sit 4 months before even being considered for review and that happened only after several unanswered attempts to contact the editor. After about 5 months it was placed under review. It's now almost month 7 and still under review. Not unheard of but still...quite a long wait.

Not a very good journal, and the Editor's treatment of mixed's manuscript described above is reflective of the (lack of) care and quality of the journal.

I waited nearly 5 months only to be told my paper does not fit the journal. No reviews. This is after two attempts to contact the editor.

8 months to get reviews that while helpful and overall positive, both wondered why it even went out for review because it didn't fit the journal. Editor agreed and said it didn't fit the journal. 8 months to figure out it didn't fit? Needless to say, if its not qualitative or a theory piece, don't bother.

Critical Criminology is the journal of the Division of Critical Criminology of the ASC. I think it is fair to say the previous editorial group dropped the ball in terms of responding to reviews, editing, etc. However, Professor David Kauzlarich assumed editorial duties in January, with with Kerry Carrington serving as the Pacific Rim editor and Greg Barak taking over the book review responsibilities. I can say with certainty that the journal will be more responsive here forward. In terms of quality, its is not on par with Theoretical Criminology or Crime, Media, Culture, but there have been plenty of important papers published there in the past and there are sure to be in the future.
Also, I do not think there is an explicit preference to "qualitative or theory" pieces, that is, if your quant piece is in line with goals of the journal, then by all means.

The previous editorial group could not handle the mission very well but the new editors are really doing good job. I submitted an article in 2012 and after 9 months and sending four emails I could get a very short comment on the paper and it was rejected. But the new editorial groups is really doing good job. I published last year in this journal and received three reviews' reports within two months and all reviews were really long and constructive. I hope that uick desicions and responsible attitudes will make this journal a respectable one in near future.
