UMass-Amherst made a shortlist of 10. They contacted candidates.

Any idea how many apps they received? Since this was an advanced assistant/early associate position, I had assumed that this one would have fewer applicants.

Is there anyone out there that can provide any more info on the UMass-Amherst[/i] advanced assistant/early associate search? Have all the calls to the shortlisters really gone out?

I just finished talking to a friend of mine who is ABD in my old department. Apparently 5+ ABD folks in my former department applied for this job.
This just goes to show how abysmal the level of mentorship in certain departments is (this is a top-20 department too). None of their committee members bothered explain to them the difference between an assistant professor and advanced assistant/associate professor. So much for professionalization.....

Don't be stupid. Many of us (including myself) applied for this knowing full well the difference. I, for one, took a gamble that the search committee might change its mind and go for a true junior. Clearly, unlike Rice and NYU, they didn't change their mind. I don't get what this has to do with mentorship.

To the above poster. It was very clearly stated (by the head of the search committee no less) that they were only interested in those with PhDs awarded prior to 2009 (a quick search on this board will confirm this). Perhaps you should be less stupid.....or at least a bit less testy. Don't worry though I saw a few job ads for department chairs that you can apply for.....
