I know a bit about this search (didn't apply - not my area). Last I heard, the committee hadn't met yet. Applications were still be sorted through on the administrative side of things by office staff. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

No updates recently. I know the chair of the committee is very busy in general. I also know they are hoping to host interviewees late this semester (rather than January or February).

I don't know how many went out. But I would doubt if they're still sending out more invites. According to the time slots they offered me, they were/are doing interviews yesterday, today, and Monday. It sounds like they want to move fast and decide on fly-outs as early as next week.
Good luck to all. I don't feel like my interview went all that well, but it's hard to tell if that's just internal hyper-sensitivity, second guessing what one could have said ...

i was wondering what types of questions are asked in a phone interview? obvious questions about research, teaching or more unexpected questions about say theory or methodology?
thanks!

Post by broadly speaking on Oct 26, 2012 12:03:46 GMT -5
I agree that asking the interviewees who have already gone to report the specific questions is expecting a little much, and is a little unfair. But perhaps the poster is looking for broader information about telephone interviews? This might warrant a separate thread, but here's my take briefly (note: I do not have an interview with Bowdoin but I have done a handful of telephone interviews over the past two weeks so this is speaking broadly and results may vary):
- tell us why you are interested in the position and our school - give us a brief summary of your research - what are your plans for your future research - what classes could you teach - if the position requires a specific course taught: *what experience do you have teaching this? *what is your approach to teaching this? *what do you see as the challenges? - if the position has a specified area of expertise, they may ask you questions about how your research and teaching specifically relate to those areas - if it's at an SLAC like Bowdoin they may ask questions related to your ability to teach and do research without the assistance of graduate students - they may ask you about any other mismatches between your past experience and the requirements of the job. For example, if it's an SLAC and all of your schooling is at research universities they may ask you about that. Or, if the students at their school are different from the type of students you have taught in the past they may ask you about that.
