Just noticed that the venting thread seems to be have been deleted. What gives? Understand there was some trash-talking but why delete the entire discussion- surely not everyone crossed the line. Particularly when it was not interfering with the other sections of the board.
El Duderino- I very much appreciate your efforts in maintaining this forum but the line between moderating and outright censorship seems to have been crossed here.

I agree. And why should one person get to single-handedly decide what gets to be considered venting and what does not? Even if people were uncomfortable with the discussion about profiling in academia, the discussion was a form of venting. If you want to have an honest board with important and honest discussion, it should not be censored.

What a sad commentary. Nothing more needs to be said.

I have been moderating these boards for over 2 years. In this entire time, I have deleted maybe one or two threads. In fact, you can look at this forum and will find many other discussions of diversity in academia, with all sorts of different views being circulated.
I deleted that thread for a few particular reasons. First, it had descended into name calling and race baiting. Second, it continued to be that even after I had simply requested that people left the venting thread for venting, and created their own thread to discuss whatever they wanted about diversity in academia. And the final straw was the presence of an obvious sock puppet trying to stir the pot.
Finally, for the last two posts: you clearly have no idea how this forum is moderated. But if you are unhappy with it, I have always been open to suggestions, criticisms, and input in general. There is even an entire subforum for that.
In that thread, I had two options: let a couple of sock puppets continue to stir the pot and troll, sometimes involving named individuals, or nuke it and hope that people who had a serious issue to discuss create a thread that is more useful to everyone. I chose the latter.
