mmmhh, interesting. I heard that they really want to make a senior hire and might even forgo a junior hire when the senior one doesn't work out.

Word on the street is that they are only looking at senior people for this position. They hired two junior people last year and are a bit junior heavy at this point.

Why even bother to accept applications from junior people then? This stuff is irritating. A handful of good jobs this year that are just taking a shotgun approach by accepting apps from anyone. Why waste your time and theirs if you know you want a senior person?

A reliable source told me that it was supposed to be advertised as a senior position and HR made a mistake when posting the advert.

It is unfortunate (that this really is a senior search advertised as an open rank search). But I think this is increasingly becoming the case: The university mandates that the search be open rank even if the department is virtually certain to only consider senior people.

Why waste your time and theirs if you know you want a senior person? FWIW, Cornell Soc has had open-rank searches for the last few years, and they've gone junior. It's not always a waste of time for a junior to apply to these jobs...

I interviewed for an open rank position last year - and got it - because one senior person they interviewed backed out and the other was a terrible fit for the job (they brought in 2 senior, 2 junior). I got the job... so it can't hurt to apply if you are interested in the job.

By all means, apply. But this will not be a search that ends with a junior hire. It would end with no hire first.
