This is the first time I'm on the market. I wanted to ask some veterans what the timeline is usually like. When can we start expecting some interview lineups for the September 1st deadlines? I've heard that interviews usually get decided three-four weeks after deadline. Does this sound right?

I think a more accurate account would be 4 - 6 weeks after the deadline. Many schools have set 4 weeks as their goals but it would be surprising if they make them. you can check last year's board for what actually happened in terms of turnaround. that said, i think this board is a great check-in regarding decisions - if no one has posted anything here, i think you are still in the clear! or at least...that's what i hope !!!

In our case (I won't identify my institution for obvious reasons), we plan to determine which candidates to bring in for interviews at our faculty meeting one month past the submission deadline, so a 4-week decision is realistic, although some places can take MUCH longer than this. When I was on the market, I heard back from one school about being on the short list maybe 3 days after the deadline had passed and another school called to schedule a phone interview several months after the deadline, so there is great variance and patience is necessary. A number of factors can impact the timing, such as whether the search is pending budgetary approval, what the other time obligations of committee members are, and what holidays fall when if places are looking to schedule interviews relatively close together so that nobody's visit fades from memory.

I think I may have posted this on last year's board. 4 days after the deadline, short list of 8-12 people decided. Then faculty had 1 week to decide on final 3-4. Met after that 1 week to vote, called folks that day to come start campus interview 1 week later. So, 2 weeks after deadline, we were contacting finalists.

any one else who's having a hard time waiting for the 09/01 deadlines to make interview decisions? OR, have some of those schools made calls and we just haven't heard yet? Security check: "Clean Fast"

It's about that time in the year. Within the next few weeks, this section of the board will start picking up.

any one else who's having a hard time waiting for the 09/01 deadlines to make interview decisions? OR, have some of those schools made calls and we just haven't heard yet? Security check: "Clean Fast" The vast majority of schools won't be making any calls until late October/early November. Seriously, use the next few weeks to make progress on your dissertation or submit a paper. Once the calls starting coming, you won't get anything done, so use this time wisely and don't fret about something that's now out of your control.
