The events are depressing and certainly of concern for the future of public higher education, but probably won't have much immediate impact on the lives of junior faculty at UVA

Intlsoc, you are probably right, but the coroporate interests wanted to cut some Humanities departments (classics and history!). Sociology may not be far behind!

On a slightly unrelated note, anti-union and anti-women's health care Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has been named the new President of Purdue University.
Two cases does not make a pattern--but this is certainly one way that Republicans can shape those pesky liberal universities.

There are many, many worse politicians than Mitch Daniels out there. He's a good selection for the Purdue presidency if true.

I'm not sure if that indicates a genuine interest in higher education (something not previously seen) or further evidence that Daniels and crew are willing to do anything to keep up the appearance of valuing education while doing irreparable harm to it. [For the record, I have never lived in Indiana]

I have lived in Indiana, but that's not really relevant here.
Whereas there could be *worse* selections for Purdue prez, I don't think Mitch Daniels, or any politician is a good choice!
We all know that politicians are influenced by corporate interests. And most of us know that corporatizing education is not in faculty or student's best interests.
And the mess at UVA continues. More faculty and administrators that oppose what's going on are being fired.
