Have heard that they are incredibly slooooooooow in the review process taking on average between 9 months and a year. Was considering submitting there, but if rumors are true i may think about an alternative. Any experiences that prove or refute rumors?

I've only submitted one paper there- it took around 6 months to receive a decision. Both of the reviewers' comments were overall very helpful.
A year seems like a pretty excessive wait time- probably not a good journal to be submitting to if you are hoping to be able to update your CV while on the market.

Any experience with communication from the editors during the review process?
I sent a manuscript six months ago, never received a confirmation of submission, and have sent two emails since with no response.
Is it worth pulling the paper?

Communication with the editors is, to put it mildly, lacking. They now say that they are averaging 7 months for the review process. Won't submit again to this journal, that's for sure.

I'm in the same boat as a previous poster. I did not recieve any receipt of submission (not even in the mail which I considered since they still require hard copies). I emailed them a while ago for a simple response they received it and got not response. Any info on this? Is this just how they do things and it is being reviewed?

That's how they roll. I went 9 months without any confirmation of receipt and then got an r&r with the three best reviews I've ever received. Then I got some response from the editor but radio silent after I resubmitted. Two months later I got an accept.

I had a terrible experience here. I had an 8 month review followed by a rejection with three reviews focused more on my article's fit with the journal than the substance of the article itself. The editor's comments were actually the worst, as they dismissed all my data collected during months of fieldwork with a set of "impressions" that the editor had formed while spending a very short time in my focus country. Would definitely not submit here again.

Indeed frustrating: Thanks for sharing. This kind of feedback is very helpful in thinking about where to submit ones articles. From all that I have heard, I feel this journal could do with more fairness, kindness and courtesy. If the article wasn't a good fit, the editor should have informed you right away and not sent it out for review.

I had a similar experience with Theory and Society. Seven months for a single, one-paragraph review and the editor basically telling us there was no way of redeeming our article. If that's true, fine, but did we have to wait seven months to hear it? I feel as though this journal and others should make much more liberal use of desk rejections.

What is the word count on this TS, I looked around their website and had a hard time looking at it.
What do people think about how this journal differs in content and reputation from Sociological Theory.

So my experience is that they are quite relaxed about wordcount issues. My pub started off as more than 13,000 words and wound up north of 15,000 all told. As far as diffs
with regard to Soc Theory, T&S tends to be more strictly "cultural" (in the broadest sense) in orientation so that meaning is almost always a central topic. In terms of
organization, their articles are more essayistic and less "social sciency" in structure. And of course they are interdisciplinary, so their readership extends beyond the
field of soc to encompass anthro, cultural studies, history, etc.

Yeah, for such a big reputation and such non-communication, and 9+ months to get reviews back ... they should have a better copyeditor. I've been reading a lot of their articles and have found WAAAAAYYYYY too many spelling errors and typos. Walk the walk, T&S.

11 months for a desk reject: one paragraph saying while its interesting its too short (the paper is 6.5k words).
I'm the 11 months they refused to acknowledge any of my emails - they never even acknowledged they received the email...
This journal is just shit and I refuse any part of it until someone tells me otherwise.
