I was wondering if anyone has information on submitting to Work and Occupations. I have a friend who submitted a paper, couldn't get updates on the status of her submission, and then after a year received a desk rejection (it never even went out for review!). Is this typical or do they turn things around fairly quickly? I know the editor has been there forever. Thanks!

Had a similar experience with W&O, though it was only seven months before we received the editor's rejection. I won't submit anything there again, at least not until it comes under new leadership.

That's what I was afraid of. Anyone with good experiences? What work journals would you recommend submitting to?

This is typical. They had my submission for seven months. Only after I bugged them about it did I receive reviews about a month later. The editor claimed he could not find a second reviewer, so he did it himself (so it wasn't blind). It was an R&R, so I revised the paper.
The second round was the same: this time, they had it for six months. I asked for an update and received two reviews with one of them being -- you guessed it -- the editor again. This time, the criticisms were much broader, the kind you would typically get on a first review, not a second one. They hated the revision. I was new to my job and they held up one of my best manuscripts for nearly 14 months.
A friend is on the editorial board and she told me she's heard several similar story. I don't know how ASA continues to tolerate this.

I have no ax to grind either for or against Work and Occupations, but it should be noted that WOX is NOT an ASA journal. So ASA is not continuing to tolerate anything. Let's at least direct our anger/frustration at the right people.

You're right, anon. My mistake. It's been a while since I dealt with them, and I had it in my head that it was. It doesn't change the fact that the editorial situation sucks.

Crazy to be reading all of these similar stories because we just had a manuscript sit for nearly 5 months with no reviewers....they asked for a list of reviewers after bugging them several times.
It's been weeks and submission system still indicates its not under review....outrageous. No e-mails back, no updates - nothing.
Can something be done about this? Maybe report to SAGE?

Had the same experience with WOX as others here: Submitted, waited for many months, inquired, received a desk rejection shortly thereafter. Article was never sent out for review. Never again, WOX, never again.

FYI, my experience has been the opposite so far.

FYI, my experience has been the opposite so far. Good for you, we're going on a year with not a peep except "it's under review".

FYI, my experience has been the opposite so far. Good for you, we're going on a year with not a peep except "it's under review". Sorry to hear, that is clearly excessive. I hope that my good experience shows that it is not uniform and there may be other factors at play. I did have something similar happen at another journal (for a different article), they kept it under review for over a year because they couldn't find someone with the expertise to review it. Eventually they found 1 reviewer and rejected it with the opportunity to re-submit it. We were quite annoyed, and declined. Now it has been under review somewhere else for about 6 months.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on with this journal? We have had to contact the Editor several times because our manuscript has been sitting for a year without a single reviewer assigned to it. Every reply is just that he's working on it.... I wanted to pull out a long time ago but my other authors are not on the same page.

Seriously. Where are the Vandy grad. students on this? Has Dan just checked out on this? Is there concern in the department? Among the editorial team? This used to be a good journal.

Someone has to have info on what's going on here. Manuscript will be "awaiting reviewer selection" for 10 months now. This is unacceptable! Can we contact Sage about this? I wouldn't even know where to get the info on this. E-mails to the editor don't work.

Vanderbilt Sociology seems to be developing a reputation of badly managing journals.
