The Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary's University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor. A strong record of research and teaching in Social Movements, Social Change and Political Economy is required. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Sociology and by way of a teaching portfolio must demonstrate ability and effectiveness in teaching core undergraduate courses in qualitative methods. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2013.

Saint Mary's is a public university with approximately 7,500 students, offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. The University is uniquely committed to serving the local, regional, national and international communities, and integrating such activity as part of the learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students. The Faculty of Arts includes a number of interdisciplinary programs: Asian Studies, Atlantic Canada Studies, International Development Studies, Irish Studies, Linguistics, Women and Gender Studies, and the new Bachelor of Environmental Studies. The Department of Sociology and Criminology, consisting of twenty full-time faculty members, offers major and minor programs in Sociology and Criminology, a Co-operative Education Program, and Master's Degrees in Criminology and Women & Gender Studies. Saint Mary's University is located in the historic port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, a vibrant, urban community of over 350,000 people. Halifax is a major educational centre for Atlantic Canada and is home to five universities. It is conveniently located to recreational areas and to other major urban centres in Canada and the Northeastern United States

Current and proposed pedagogical approaches to teaching
Research and other scholarly experience and expertise
Current publications (with particular emphasis on peer-reviewed contributions)
Future research agenda
Other relevant experience and expertise (professional work, volunteering, etc.)

It would be nice if whoever posts jobs from Canada also posts the province or city in the subject line instead of just "Canada." Canada is a huge country-- larger than the U.S. It's very diverse from east to west, geographically, culturally, and ethnically. It's not one single homogenous place.

Also, many Canadians find it annoying when Americans use "Canada" as an excuse to omit more specific locations that require an actual knowledge of Canada. For example, when Americans say "Vancouver, Canada" instead of "Vancouver, BC." Canadians never say "Seattle, USA." They say "Seattle, WA." Hence, more of a focus on the provinces would be nice.

It's subtle, but some Canadians read these sorts of things as "I don't care enough about Canada to find out where this place is actually located." It's sort of like when you live in Vancouver and your American friend in Buffalo, NY asks if you can drive and meet up for lunch (this happened to me). Nails on a chalkboard.

Homework: Try not replying to this post until you can name all the provinces from west to east without looking at a map (and territories too).

I think the inclusion of (Canada) was merely to differentiate the call from that of St Mary's in the US which was also recently listed.

I can list the provinces and territories if you would like....

I don't think the OP was trying to disrespect our neighbors to the north, I too believe that it was just to make sure to we knew it was distinct the the California, USA St. Mary's.

And, I too, can name the provinces and territories.

Well, in her/his defense, Canadians are hyper-sensitive to things Americans do and say. There's a general feeling in Canada that the U.S. is insular and concerned only with itself. Canada, for instance, is the U.S.'s largest trading partner and largest supplier of oil. Americans should be intimately familiar with it. Instead, it's a running joke how little Americans know about it.

And, some Canadians feel jaded because they spend time watching CBS, NBC, etc., and are very aware of U.S. (and world) happenings. Few Americans, on the other hand, watch CBC (which is quite good) or care to know what goes on in Canada. One can see how that might be upsetting.

Many Americans live in a blissful world where all is well in U.S.- Canada relations. They don't realize that the Canadian government gets strong-armed by the U.S. government into drug approvals, environmental regulations, trade regulations, border security measures, and so forth. (See Maude Barlow's book "Too Close for Comfort: Canada's Place in Fortress North America") It's also a bit scary to share a border with a country that accounts for 51% of world military spending, when you invest little in your own military. Many Canadians feel somewhat bullied, despite the cultural and geographic proximity to the U.S. As a result, the term I hear Canadians use often is "frenemies" to describe Americans. Yet, few Americans realize this.

So, I think it would go a long way if those in the States at least realized that the tension exists. An understanding of that tension is necessary to understand comments such as canuck's.
