I am second author on an article published in this journal a few years ago. The first author handled all the correspondence, so I don't remember exactly how long things took. But we had a good experience overall. I don't remember it taking excessively long. There could be a different editor now, I don't know.

Colleagues have reported both quick turnaround times and long delays with JOH.
I've reviewed for the journal in the past, and if I recall correctly, the editor asks reviewers to submit reviews within 30 days.
Other possibilities for your ms: Gender & Society, Sexuality Research & Social Policy, Sexualities, Signs

I have published twice in the JOH. The review process was especially slow, getting the reviews and the lag time to publish, but the journal is more receptive to LGBT issues the any outltet in Sociology. That is, JOH values contribtutions to the literature even if the research design is not really rigorous (i.e., Sociological journals like massive sample sizes, something that is difficult to acquire in studies of sexual minorities).
