I've only submitted sole-authored papers to ASA in the past; however, this year I submitted co-authored papers to ASA.
I will be the one presenting the papers, since I am first author, but my co-authors received an email saying they had to pre-register or their names would be removed from the program. Does ASA force co-authors to pay for their names to be on the program? I've never heard of another conference operating in this way.
It appears I'll be removing my co-authors name from the presentation, which seems unethical since they contributed to the paper. Am I the only one who finds this unreasonable?

I was co-author on a paper last year and did not even attend and the first author gave the presentation but I was still listed.

From the email:
"Per ASA Program Committee policy, all participants on the Annual Meeting program must pre-register for the meeting. A "participant" is anyone who is listed as a paper author or co-author or who serves as presider, discussant, panelist, critic, workshop/seminar leader, discussion leader, table presider, or any other type of presenter or coordinator on any program session. Only one registration and fee payment is required from a participant. Participant pre-registration fees are non-refundable. Sociologists who are not members of ASA must register at the Non-member rate. Special non-member rates are available for scholars outside the U.S. and persons from other disciplines.
Presenters who have not preregistered will be dropped from the online and final programs beginning on June 4."

Don't worry about it. It is nonsense; I have never yet seen names of co-authors who didn't go to the conference removed from the schedule. Furthermore, I've never even seen roundtable presenters removed from the program when they haven't registered by the deadline. Don't have people waste their money, and it certainly is unacceptable to remove the names of co-authors from the presentation.
