Discussion in another thread started going in the direction of "funky" departments where a lot of research is being done on new/interesting subjects.
This piqued my interest. What departments do people think are funky?

I'm not surprised that no one has volunteered a "funky" department. Given another thread on department ranking, there appears to be a strong commitment to conformity among a good number of forum discussants. Perhaps this is why a good amount of American sociology is so dreadfully boring: too many people scrambling to toe the line and/or willing to publicize really uncreative and mundane ideas about department status and rankings.
UT-Austin, Yale, and Oregon, I think, are at least a little funky.

If by funky you mean so incredibly un-funky that it is in fact a little funky, then yes, I agree that UT-Austin is funky.

If by funky, you mean never denuding assistants and providing lackluster training across the social sciences, then Yale is certainly funky.
Most of the faculty there fo research that is pretty mainstream for their subfields. That doesn't mean the research isn't good though.

I think there are some departments where people are doing unconventional, creative work. University of Massachusetts-Amherst comes to mind. Maybe some of the liberal arts college departments too -- like Pomona and Wellesley. San Francisco State. I'd like to hear about others!

If by "garbage" you mean yet another research project using the "latest" method on the topic of the day that no one will ever read even if one's friends managed to get it included in the AJS or ASR....

Wow, you guys are terrible humans. Way to shit all over a thread. On the other hand, "funky" is a term only out of touch yuppies use to describe subcultural elements they don't understand.

I'd second the Oregon comment above. Lots of young, innovative scholars doing interesting work. Exciting department. (I'm not at Oregon, either).
