Connecticut College. The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning Fall 2012 with teaching and research interests in one or more of the following areas: social movements and collective action; crime, law and deviance; environment and technology; and medical sociology. Preference will be given to candidates with (or near) a PhD in sociology, and with demonstrated teaching and scholarly capabilities. The College strongly supports success in the classroom through its Center for Teaching and Learning, and intellectual life in the social sciences through its multidisciplinary centers, including the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, The Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts, and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity.
Connecticut College is a private, highly selective institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. Recognizing that intellectual vitality and diversity are inseparable, the College has embarked on a significantly successful initiative to diversify its faculty, student body and curriculum. The College seeks creative scholars excited about working in a liberal arts setting, with its strong focus on engaged teaching, participation in shared governance, and active involvement in an institution-wide advancement of diversity.
Tenure-track faculty members teach a 3-2 load (2-2 in the first year). In addition to providing ongoing strong support for teaching and research, the College offers the following resources for pre-tenured faculty: a summer stipend for the first two years, a supplementary research fund, and a semester’s sabbatical after a successful third-year review.
Please send a letter of application describing your teaching and research interests and experience, a curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course evaluations), an example of your best scholarship (no longer than article length), and three letters of reference to Robert Gay, Chair and Professor of Sociology, Box 5478, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320-4196.
