I understand from another thread that Tulane has been hiring VAPs for several years now. My question is why the current VAPs are not asked to stay longer? Why hire someone new every year? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

often schools have a rule that if any faculty member is on staff for more than a certain number of years, they gain de-facto tenure. so that would be one reason to keep shuffling staff.

Does anyone have a sense of what they mean by "any area of human relations"?

That's a great question. I just figured it meant anything, but I'm glad you asked!

The other post is wrong, they have not hired VAPs for several years. As far as I know, they have hired 3 assistant profs in the past couple of years and 1 VAP. Also, guesty is right, which is why the contract limits on VAPs is 2-years in most research universities...
The way I see it, human relations is a pretty 'open' call. Maybe they had to word it in a certain way due to admin reasons? Does anyone know for sure?

That's how I read the language. I suppose it could be a reference to social work fields. At least, they should not be surprised if they get responses to ambiguous language as though it is an open call.

They might have opened up one VAP position for Katherine Johnson, because her partner, Patrick Rafail, was hired for one of the tt positions.
