The Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago invites applications for a first-term tenure-track position as an assistant professor with a focus on urban social organization. The successful applicant may be a qualitative or a quantitative researcher working on either micro- or macro-level questions. The area of specialization within urban sociology is open; possible topics include (but are not limited to) education, well-being, employment, family, mobility, migration, criminal justice, health, housing, economy, organizational capacity, network, and culture. The position requires maintaining a rigorous program of independent research, teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students, and contributing to the University of Chicago's lively interdisciplinary research community. Appointment begins in the fall of 2012; PhD degree must be in hand by September 1, 2012. Applications must be submitted online, at tinyurl.com/3nexvqo. Applications are required to include 1) a brief cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a research and teaching statement, including concrete descriptions of future plans for research and teaching philosophy; and 4) one sample of the applicant's strongest written material (a published article or unpublished paper or chapter).
