Does this matter or are the thank you e-mails more for after the campus visit?

Does this matter or are the thank you e-mails more for after the campus visit? If you want the job, Id do it quick. Personally, I hate and maybe even despise formalities like this, but when candidates email me on the "other side" nowadays, I know they are not just performing the right motions, they are indicating actual interest. Plus, other people are just weird about it. It can only hurt you if you dont.

From my perspective on a SC, this doesn't matter. However, if it's an especially thoughtful followup on anything discussed, that would help.

From Franz Kafka's parable "Before the Law": The man, who has equipped himself with many things for his journey, spends everything, no matter how valuable, to win over the gatekeeper. The latter takes it all but, as he does so, says, “I am taking this only so that you do not think you have failed to do anything.”

I'm the one who said this doesn't matter from my perspective. Still true! But I remembered that one of my colleagues, who chaired our search, really did take it as a sign of interest when people sent thank yous after Zooms. So I recommend doing this even though it's a bit silly. (The Kafka quote above is great.)

The thing is that at least at my place, I am not allowed to respond or even acknowledge such emails because doing so could be construed as favoritism in some way. We aren't allowed to communicate with candidates outside of the interview process. So while it's fine to get them, I don't really do much of anything with them and certainly wouldn't use getting one or not as any indication of much of anything.
