Good evening everyone, I wanted to ask you all when is the academic job market officially done for the year? Especially search for VAPs? Is it going into April? Or even May?

The searches for positions starting in the fall term will continue well beyond May, into the summer and possibly the week before the start of the semester. Far fewer tenure-track opportunities, lots more VAPs. But the closer we get to August the less likely these will look like national searches. Increasingly desperate departments will start advertising more narrowly, especially reaching out to regional PhD-granting institutions that might have some ABD candidates they can recommend. Best to start bookmarking the HR pages of colleges and universities in your area and start a routine of checking them on a weekly basis.

Every year, faculty announce in April or May or even later that they are leaving to take a different position. Then we often do a search for a VAP. This is always a national search, as we then can make the argument to administration to potentially convert the VAP into a TT position without having to do another search.

Thank you for your help. One more question - is taking a VAP limits my chances in getting R2 school position? I am not looking for R1 schools.
