Would anyone want to work here after how the admin treated that adjunct?
As soon as I saw this thread get started, I knew it was start a firestorm of discussions that will have nothing to do with the actual status of this search. And I normally discourage that, reminding everybody that this thread should be about the status of the search rather than of the prospective employer.
However, given that (1) the application deadline apparently just closed and there won't be many updates on reference requests or zoom invitations or whatever for a while, and (2) the issues with this institution are most definitely public, I'm going to make an exception for a while. If necessary, I will later move some of that to a separate thread, but for the moment this seems like the best place for any comments one wants to make.
I do hope we can avoid just restating the same positions over and over again.

I am not at Hamline but am local to the area, and know people from a range of departments who have worked (or still do!) at Hamline. Hamline is facing similar enrolment and thus fiscal challenges to other liberal arts colleges in Minnesota (and around the country) that do not have a big endowment (i.e. Carleton, Macalester, St Olaf are in a different category). The East African Islamic population in the Twin Cities is not insignificant, and with that population having been in the Twin Cities since the 1990s all of the local universities are seeing increased enrolments from that group. Augsburg College, for example, has enrolled a growing Somali-American population over the last couple of decades.
The bigger picture of the situation is that relatively speaking Muslim students are a growing share of the potential market for colleges in Minnesota, and I suspect some of Hamline's response to this image of the prophet situation is conditioned by not offending that market.
It's that bigger picture of cramped institutional financial resources and sensitivity to enrolments that should be of interest to candidates over the long term, and in that respect Hamline's position is similar to lots of others around the country.

I am guessing that all applicants received this note, but here is it for the record:
"Thank you very much for your interest in the tenure track Assistant Professor of Social Justice and Social Change position at Hamline University. We have completed our process this year and will unfortunately not be making an appointment as a result of our process this year. While we were not able to extend an offer for the position at this time, we’re extremely grateful for your investment of time in the process. We recognize and appreciate - sincerely your interest in the position. We also recognize that process proceeded somewhat more slowly than may have been ideal and we regret the delay in our reaching out with this notification. On behalf of the committee, we do hope that you have a have a lovely and productive summer."

Is the failed search related to the stuff that's kept them in the news and its associated turmoil, or unrelated?

Perhaps a mix. I know someone who rejected an offer from Hamline due to issues largely unrelated to what has kept them in the news. It was part of their consideration, but very minimal in the broader calculus. But I don't know where they fall in the line of offers/rejections...

Any information about Hamline? Where is it standing regarding salaries? Is it impossible to conduct research there? thanks!
