Under indirect supervision, develops program of research through designing specific projects for submission to funding agencies. Implements research and demonstrates projects in defined area of specialization. Prepares papers reporting research results for presentation to scientific/professional organizations and for publication in scientific/professional literature. Participates in overall development of Center for Health Research (CHR)/Center for Health Research Hawaii (CHRH) research agenda. designs, develops, and obtains funding for delimited but well-defined research, demonstration, and evaluation projects in defined area of expertise in order to add to knowledge about health and health care delivery; writes and submits large government and foundation grant applications. Develops ongoing program of research through coordinating series of research proposals and projects into logical investigation of particular research question, topic, or area. Implements research and demonstrates projects in defined area of specialization.
Essential Functions:
• Prepares and publishes research papers; disseminates research results through presentations and publications in scientific and professional journals, books, etc.
• Provides technical consulting and professional service to KP, and serves on various KP committees and task forces
• Participates in ongoing maintenance of CHR/CHRH through assisting in development of Center policy, providing technical services and consultation to other CHR staff; helps define CHR/CHRH's future research agenda
• Participates in educational activities by helping to train undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students pursuing health or health services research careers
• Provides service to professional and scientific community through membership on scientific peer review groups and national policy and advisory boards
• Consults with local, state, and national voluntary and governmental agencies
• Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
• One year of experience as co-or Principal Investigator of federally-funded or large foundation-funded research projects in the Investigator's area of expertise and in the organization, policies, practices, and management of the U.S. health care systems
• Three years of experience writing and submitting $250,000 government and large foundation research grant applications as a Principal Investigator
• Authorship of two or more published research papers and principal author of one or more research papers; experience in presenting research finding at national and international meetings; and written recommendations from three nationally recognized experts in the Investigator's area of expertise
• Doctoral degree in social sciences, medicine, healthcare, or related field
• Demonstrated experience in conducting research with minority populations in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world
• Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods (from mathematics and statistics) for dealing with methodological and analytic problems in a defined area of expertise (e.g., epidemiology, sociology, economics)
• Working knowledge of a standard statistical software application (e.g., SAS or SPSS) and relational database design.
• Demonstrated experience in reviewing proposals and research papers, working with support staff and researchers regarding the organizational functions, systems, and related processes (e.g., budgeting)
• Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in creativity/innovation, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, teamwork, and written communication (scientific/technical)
• Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications
• Talking to coworkers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone
• Reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English
• Training/giving and receiving instructions
• Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g., organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration, and alertness
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in organizing and transmitting the knowledge of own discipline, through teaching at the college or university level as an assistant or associate professor
