scheduled interviews. All 3 candidates are associate professors who all share the same personal background and their research interests are very much alike. Yes, that’s what I heard and that was by design and influence of [snip], who is still around harassing and being terrible to grad students. Folks, try not to be too bummed. The department is notoriously toxic, can’t keep black faculty, and doesn’t care a lick about their grad students.

Like other places, whether the faculty cares about the grad students depends heavily on which faculty. I’ve known several students to come out of there—they place very well at times—and those ones reported great experiences. But I’m sure they have some bad advisors too.

(don't get it confused with faculty who are at CUNY 4-year colleges and teach from time to time at the GC
Not more toxic than any other department. more concerning is that lack of diversity in the candidates that they are bringing in; that speaks more to a particular agenda that someone has, as there are many qualified candidates who would be a good fit.

The line was to replace a black woman who left. This forum will snip the name but if you’re interested you can find out. Aside from the one Black person there, they don’t keep other black faculty who have come in. For years, they have had a two tier grad student system, where some students are funded and others not. The unfunded students have had to adjunct to survive and then don’t complete and place as well as funded students. Faculty are overall (not all of them) not as supportive of unfunded students. Toxicity: there are newer faculty who are supportive of grad students, who teach new material, and are altogether lovely. Then there is an older guard who have been there for decades who, yes, sir, are toxic and unsupportive of grad students and have harassed students and newer faculty. Facts. Still, it is true that many departments are toxic but I think the point was just to say, if you didn’t get the job, the on the job conditions aren’t great so try no to be too upset.
