Was on the market during the pandemic and was still told to keep the cover letter to a max of 2 pages. That's why I kept saying people might have limited information with just the CV + cover letter. But I agree with (and appreciate) your perspective. Thanks for the generative discussion! Best of luck to the finalists! If a school is not requesting a separate research statement, we general suggest to students in my department that they can write 3 to 3.5 pages, rather than keep to the typical 2. I can't read more than 2 pages before I get bored. And for ABDs + postdocs I don't see any reason why you would need more. I don't hold it against people when their cover letters are longer than 2 pages but I do have one colleague who does.

Does your department ask for other statements besides the cover letter?
In the Northwestern AP searches this year, which didn't ask for additional statements, they explicitly said cover letters can be up to 3 pages long.

Re: comment above--we don't ask for a research statement, we do ask for a teaching statement and DEI statement. We expect that the cover letter is mostly a research statement. More advanced people will often have 3 pages without a problem but for ABDs and postdocs I don't really see a need.
That's interesting that Northwestern clarified that. Why not just ask for a research statement? Probably bureaucracy.

AP here, been rolling with a 3-4 page cover letter. got two interviews (but also got rejected from Duke). My sense is that the cover letter isn't going to sink your battleship, but having relevant info in it could help. also, if you're getting bounced on the first round, it's probably a not particularly competitive CV or an unsexy research program.

It's down to 6 people. If you haven't heard back, you're probably still in it. Or check your spam folder.
