I received and accepted an offer a month ago. Turned down two other offers as I had accepted verbally. It’s been a month and no official paperwork yet. I’m getting anxious. They’re saying it will come but they don’t know when. Is this normal?

Sorry you’re going through this. 4 weeks definitely on the longer side but there are a lot of layers of approval the letter has to go through. If someone takes a holiday, or is out of office, that might hold things up. It wouldn’t hurt to just ask for an update from the search chair. They might provide some reassurance and let you know they just need one or two more sign offs

The end of the semester can be a really busy time. Like someone else already said, if the dean is on vacation, if the HR people who draft the contract are out sick, or for whatever miscellaneous reason, it can take longer than expected. Feel free to email the search or department chair next week and politely ask for an update. I’m sure things will be fine.

Not specific to this situation, perhaps, but often people rely too heavily on email for situations like this and then become frustrated when the issue drags on longer. Email is more difficult for quicker resolutions when there is no social pressure (like from an established relationship) to respond or deal with the problem. Too many people have forgotten how to use the phone as an in-real-time audio communication device. It can often give you a much better (and faster) sense of what is going on.
