This probably varies by department, but for new APs, how often is it expected to physically be in the office? On days when you don’t have to teach and don’t have any in-person meetings, are you still expected to be on campus at your desk working?

Obviously (?) there are pre-covid norms, and post-covid norms that are still evolving. But IME (I've been in 3 departments in my career) it varies wildly even at ostensibly similar institutions. Personal relationships and spontaneous conversations are a non-trivial part of academia, but not nearly the whole of it. Too much time with your door open easily cuts into productive time. Not a terrible subject to ask about on a campus visit, but even then the true nature of it might only be discoverable after a while in a place. A formal requirement to be at the office would be exceptional. Informal expectations to be there regularly, absolutely. SLACs with high expectations for student support are likely to have the highest expectations here. Someone should do an ethnography
