Hello,
I am an advanced tenure-track Assistant Professor at a small liberal arts college that needs some advice on my current job situation. This is my second Assistant Professor position as I left three years into my first for my current job due to it being a bit more money ($7k in base and about $20k over the year) and being in a better city. However, my current university has not fulfilled multiple promises, such as no pay raises for faculty for over 13 years, they dropped retirement contributions to 0% for my first three years and 2% for my current year (it was 7% at my hiring date and dropped to 0% after my contract was signed), and no good news on the horizon. Other issues are that they do not provide money for conference travel for tenured faculty and have reneged on multiple promises to me. Moreover, I was hired as a 3-3 teaching load, but have taught 4-4 every semester since my first (I even taught 5 one semester!). I was also supposed to advise no more than 30 students a semester, and have averaged 55 with a high of 75. I recently asked for a raise and they told me there was no money (despite giving new hires more money), but maybe in 1.5 years. These are just a few of many issues (e.g., fighting me every time I attempt to get reimbursed for conference travel, faculty recruitment, etc.).
I am being recruited by a much bigger university (state school) with a $17K pay raise in base salary, slightly better benefits, and a nearly 15% retirement match (compared to my current 2%). My hesitation is that I go up for tenure in September (which I will no doubt receive as I've been a fortunate researcher) and bought a house here last year. Moreover, the larger university is in a remote part of the country. I believe I can negotiate all but maybe two years or so towards tenure, but the thought of starting over again in any capacity is mentally exhausting. I realize I am in a privileged position compared to many on the job market, but I would still like some unbiased advice on if I should pursue this other opportunity. Thank you in advance.
