Is it typical for search committees to notify final candidates once an offer has been accepted by a different candidate? If so, what is the normal timing on this?

In my case, yes. I was a finalist at a school where another candidate had accepted the offer, and the department chair reached out to me to notify me that I did not get the job. It took about a week after the offer was out.
However, I had requested that they notify me because I had another offer on the table and had to make a time-sensitive decision. If you have an offer, you can reach out to them and request that they do the same.

Usually they will let finalists know...but it's not as standard as it should be. My guess is 70% of finalists hear back they didn't get the offer. But 30% is still pretty large considering how much work it is to fly out. I never heard back from somewhere I flied out to in October. I emailed and still never heard back lol. I think it's cold, but sometimes profs just don't care about their runner ups. And if they can't say anything "due to HR" then they should tell you that in the interview.
