I've started this thread for comic relief for those who have been having tough days, weeks, months, years.
I was on the job market 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. In times of despair when I wasn't getting any bites, I would brainstorm alternative careers, please feel free to add your thoughts.
1) Open a milkshake bar - Modeled after "Millions of Milkshakes." I thought this one threw the most and even looked into a franchise and possible locations I would use in my city. I would have a pick your own ingredients almost completely self-service milkshake bar. Millions of Milkshakes, based out of Hollywood, has celebrity shakes where stars come in and create their own personal milkshake like the "Miley Cyrus." My twist was going to include lactose free alternatives so soy, almond, and coconut milk would be options. The milk and ice cream would be rGBH free. Additionally, you could add healthy shots of wheat grass, etc. So, better then a smoothy, yogurt, or ice cream place. I was pretty desperate at the time.
2) Become a chiropractor. I never did well at biology or physiology, but it just seemed like a low stress job and I wouldn't have to cut anyone open or see anyone naked. I would have access to Biofreeze and my clients would be into alternative medicine and you could still call me doctor. I was very saddened to research it and find that a lot of science courses were required and I would have more in student loans.
3) Any job paying over 30K on idealist.org - I was all over the place looking at Racial justice activist in Oakland, college prep test tutor, charter school teacher at underperforming schools in urban centers, LGBTQ organization event or fundraising coordinator. I was looking for anything.
4) An organic farmer - I can't keep a basil plant alive in my house for more than 3 days. I thought this option would at least be a low cost of living and I could eat some good food while doing it. I wasn't sure who would want a completely inexperienced person on their organic farm but I was gonna do my best to sell myself.
5) Move abroad to a country with socialized medicine and get a sugar mama or daddy.
Luckily, I was awarded a postdoc and the next year received multiple job offers so I didn't get to realize my milkshake making dream. Perhaps if I don't get tenure...
