The position is for the calendar year, beginning January 2017 and ending December 2017. The position requires the candidate be at least ABD in Sociology, as well as the ability to demonstrate a history of teaching excellence, and the ability to teach the following courses: Classical Social Theory, Sociology of Sexuality, Global Problems, and Sociology of Gender. The Position: The Department of Sociology is searching for a Visiting Professor for a one-year position starting January, 2017 and ending December 2017. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Position is contingent on funding.
Minimum Qualifications: The minimum educational requirement for appointment to this position ABD in Sociology at the time of appointment. The ability to teach the following courses is required: Classical Theory, Sociology of Sexuality, Sociology of Gender, and Global Problems. Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a commitment to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Sociology. Willingness and ability to teach Contemporary Families and other courses should the Department need arise. Capability and willingness to adapt to the pedagogical and technological approaches necessary for high quality online teaching. We especially encourage candidates who have worked with underrepresented students of color and first-generation college students.
Responsibilities: This visiting position carries responsibilities for teaching only (no research responsibilities are required). Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.
Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience.
The Department: The Sociology Program delivers a high-quality undergraduate program. Rooted in the teacher-scholar tradition, we foster the development of critical thinking skills in our students and the application of sociological theories and concepts to everyday life. Using a combination of research, sociological knowledge, and writing, we engage our students in the craft of disciplined sociological inquiry. We stress both practical and scholarly applications, which translate into job and life skills.
The Sociology Department consists of ten tenured and tenure-track faculty and additional part-time faculty with a strong commitment to high quality undergraduate education for a diverse student body. Course delivery involves traditional on-campus courses, and for certain sections, web-streaming of lectures. Sequenced courses in sociological methods and social theory are at the heart of the major. Service learning and engagement with diverse local communities are valued. Tenure and tenure-track faculty also have active programs in research, writing, and grant administration.
