Assistant or Associate Professor of Anthropology or Sociology, Human and Community Sustainability
Wofford College invites applications for a new tenure-track position for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Anthropology or Sociology with a specialty in Human and Community Sustainability. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in sustainability studies, urban studies, sociology, anthropology, political science or a related field. We seek innovative scholars who model interdisciplinary, inclusive approaches to sustainability, and who employ critical theory in studying and collaborating with urban communities.
We expect applicants to have experience doing ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation with a strong commitment to public, participatory, and community work. Applied or basic research experience with urban communities undergoing change is desirable.
The new faculty member will fill a position funded by a Romill Foundation grant, and will therefore be committed to fulfilling the vision of the Milliken Sustainability Initiative at Wofford College. This will require the successful candidate to apply theoretical and methodological expertise to developing a new long-term project in the Northside and Glendale neighborhoods of Spartanburg, SC that includes participation from both Wofford students and community stakeholders.
Candidates are expected to be teacher-scholars with a high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship. The new faculty member will be devoted to supporting undergraduates in their academic courses and internships. We expect the new colleague to be active in community engagement efforts in the Northside and Glendale neighborhoods. The new faculty member will collaborate with colleagues across campus, especially with other participants in the Milliken Sustainability Initiative, the Environmental Studies Program, and the Center for Community Based Learning. The new professor will initiate and foster collaborations with community partners, including Northside and Glendale community members and the City of Spartanburg’s Northside Initiative.
The new hire’s home department is the Sociology and Anthropology Department, which offers both the major and minor as joint sociology-anthropology degrees. The candidate will complement and expand the existing expertise of the faculty in our small department. The new faculty member will teach courses in sustainability and in area of expertise. The successful applicant will have a 9-month academic year contract to begin in late August 2017.
The successful candidate will teach some courses embedded in communities near campus, developing new understandings of community sustainability and resilience in the context of coupled social-ecological systems. The Human and Community Sustainability faculty member will work with staff in Wofford’s Center for Community-Based Learning to build meaningful local partnerships with both public and private organizations for curricular and co-curricular activities (e.g. courses, internships, student projects, and community-based research). The person filling the new position will be expected to engage with the community to establish meaningful connections between Wofford College and our neighbors and to generate productive internships for our students.
