Sociologists in labor and population research at RAND work on multi-disciplinary teams to explore research topics such as U.S. labor markets, demography of families and children, social welfare policy and family and child well-being, financial decision making, social and economic functioning of the elderly, and economic and social change in developing countries. Researchers at RAND are involved in contributing or leading project proposals; defining or helping to define policy problems for structured analysis; conducting a range of qualitative and quantitative research; preparing, presenting or contributing to project briefings; drafting, editing and contributing to research papers and project reports and other responsibilities as appropriate.
The Labor and Population Program includes a post-doctoral training program, NIH-funded centers, and two active seminar series in labor and population issues. Current research topics are characterized by a focus on children and families, labor market and human capital investments, socioeconomic disparities in health, and the social and economic functioning of the elderly. Program staff have been involved in collecting and analyzing data from large survey efforts, including the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey, the New Immigrant Survey, Health and Retirement Studies in the U.S. Europe, and Asia (a total of some 25 countries), and many others. Labor and Population also runs the American Life Panel, a population representative Internet panel of some 5000 respondents, which can be used for surveys and experiments in a wide range of domains.
RAND’s Labor and Population Division is looking to both grow in these areas and to expand into other domains of demographic research. If interested, employees also have opportunities to receive appointments and teach in the RAND Graduate School.
The RAND Corporation invites applications for junior, mid-career, and senior sociologists interested in labor and population research. RAND is a non-profit policy research organization with over 600 full-time researchers that houses the RAND Graduate School, the world’s leading producer of PhDs in policy analysis.
