avoid this place like the plague??? Had a campus there in a previous hiring season. Hated it. It was awful, I was treated like shit (a lot of questions that seemed very much like personal attacks), and I seriously wondered why they even bothered bringing me out. Took a job elsewhere, sent an email to the chair thanking them for the visit, but relaying that I took a job elsewhere (a job in which I couldn't be happier in). I have nothing good to say about CJ at Sam Houston. Unless you're into biological crime.

I will have to agree with the previous comment. Overall my onsite was not terrible but there were faculty members who posed more personal attack questions on my research agenda. My approach differed greatly from their approaches and they made it known. I did not think it was an appropriate time or place to have that discussion. Sam does have quality scholars, losing their better ones each year it looks like, but I noticed an ego problem. Multiple faculty voiced that their PhD program should be ranked higher as it stands. Yes, egos come with the territory, but it makes Sam uninviting.

I have never applied/interviewed but I must say I'm not surprised by the negative comments. A friend of mine interviewed there either last year of two years ago for a position, and s/he had nothing nice to say about the visit. Interviewing faculty seemed very unenthusiastic and the entire trip was very disorganized. S/he said that if offered the position, would have turned it down unless no other offers were made (ended up with a job elsewhere).

Interesting to hear these remarks. I have heard opposite from friends who interviewed there in the last 2 years. They were corrections scholars, though, so that may make it different? Since they are very well connected corrections wise. I also know faculty who have recently taken positions there (even though they had offers elsewhere) and they are very happy. Like any school, you have to go on the interview and find out for yourself. I applied and would be grateful to get an interview.

I second the last post. Sam has a doctoral program, lots of resources, and tons of active faculty. What more can you ask for? If you had a bad interview experience, it does not necessarily mean the department is a bad place to work. Maybe you weren't the right fit. Crossing my fingers for a call from them.

Unfortunately I cannot name-names here, but there is a reason I did not take an offer here. The faculty are largely either research unproductive or rather unpleasant human beings. In fact, look at the quality of the students turned out by the department in recent years. Right now, no stand outs come to mind. This is suggestive of the quality of the program and the quality of the training. Just saying.

Are you saying placements at University of Louisville and Florida Atlantic are not good placements? I guess everyone has a different opinion. But top programs the past 2 years did not have better placements of their Ph.D. students. Perhaps you should layout all of the programs before making judgements about SHSU. Sounds like you have a personal issue with them.

You don't sound very informed! I would venture a guess that you are trying to get potential applications against SHSU. What's up with that?

Sounds like you have a personal issue with them. This is a waste of time. Some like SHSU. Some don't. Some just want to know if the search is progressing. If you have details about the search, let the board know. If you are a scorched-earth critic or Sammy Bearkat fanboy (yes, that is the SHSU mascot), consider just sulking alone or simply lurking. It is fair to say that this back-and-forth has no added value.

This is a "status" thread, referring to the status of the search process, not the status of the institutions in question. We were okay with a few "buyer beware" posts, but now it is past time to move on.
