For the APs out there: if you hear that a department you might be interested in will be hiring, do you contact friends/acquaintances there ahead of time?

Sure. I've done it with two separate openings. Don't be surprised or upset if the friend directs you to the search chair. Some public schools have to abide by very rigid state policies regarding hiring processes. The appearance of special treatment could cause problems.

I think it works if it's done well prior to turning in an application. You know, ask about the department and the city - your friends might also be helping you avoid trouble if they give you signs that the place is a snakepit or that they're planning to leave.

Funny that "special treatment" is to be avoided when constructed in such narrow terms. Special treatment is the way the game is played--special treatment based on pedigree, who your adviser is, which institution you come from, your research method, and on and on. The impersonal "who knows who" is often allowed, and this game is only a problem when the common folk try to play it.
