Shouldn't there be more up by now?

Are more jobs posted through the ASA meeting service?

I was thinking it was still early in the process. Many more will follow. There are at least 10 good jobs so far, in my opinion, and it's only the 1st of July.
Anyone have historical perspective on how the market normally goes? Do a lot of announcements come after the Fall semester begins?

It's barely July. Most jobs won't be posted until mid-August/September. As for ASA, I don't know, last year there weren't many jobs posted there but there were still plenty of "real" job ads. Maybe schools aren't using it as much. 3 years ago I had 6 interviews at ASA, last year I had one and it was not really even worth the time. I am not doing it at all this year.

This is my second round on the market, and if I'm remembering correctly there are close to the same number of jobs listed this time last year (give or take 2 or 3). There will be a huge surge towards the middle of August. The anticipation is killing me though.

Word in my dept is that we will have two (R1) tenure-track positions this year.

I know & find it terribly hard to be patient, but I think its important to bear in mind that we are 14-15 months away from most start dates. A lot of schools have problems with the admin budgeting money & posting jobs so far in advance with all the budget uncertainty.
That's from a former chair at an R1 said while we discussed new positions at the R1 I'm currently at, & I think its fairly common right now. As noted above, there will hopefully be much more out in August and September. That is what I've seen in the past, & hopefully won't change this year [cross your fingers for not falling into a recession like fall of '08!]

I was on the market last year and I agree that most jobs don't get posted until August and September, but that's not all of them! I was applying to new job postings through February of this year.
Also, at my R1 we had a job-line approved (not for an assistant, sorry!) but the ad hasn't come out in the ASA job bank yet. So sometimes these things just take awhile.

Anyone have historical perspective on how the market normally goes? Do a lot of announcements come after the Fall semester begins? I’ve been archiving monthly lists of ASA job-bank postings for a while now. Here’s some historical info, based on the number of pages in each .pdf file I have saved. Some postings do take two pages, and some jobs listed in June and July are for emergency fall hires, but this provides a rough guide to job market activity. A total of 32 positions were listed in June of 2011. This is (remarkably) the exact average for the previous four seasons, and there should be at least twice as many coming in during each of July and August. October seems to be draw the biggest haul. 2007 2008 2009 2010 | Average ---------------------------------------|--------- June 35 35 29 27 | 32 July 110 78 30 63 | 70 August 96 90 50 79 | 79 September 35 41 70 84 | 58 October 94 94 101 115 | 101 November 53 29 58 32 | 43 December 25 41 36 37 | 35 ---------------------------------------|--------- June-December 448 408 374 437 | 417

I second that! The only thing I can think of to add is that R1's often appear earlier in the process, & teaching-focused schools a often a bit later. Just a general, informal observation

One thing to note about the numbers from 2008 and 2009 is that it does not account for all the canceled searches. Both of those years were plagued with cancellations. I can't remember which was worse, 2008 or 2009, but 2010 was a much better year than 2009. Let's hope 2011 continues to improve.

Things are better than 2009. The risk is another collapse resulting from austerity and budget cuts, then things could get worse than in 2008/2009. In that case, one might best be employed helping the proletariat create the revolution!

is archivist out there with an opinion on how things are looking now compared to the previous years? Or some other opinionated soul? Sort of seems like there are a LOT of jobs up and it's pretty early! Do you think places are trying to get more of a head start than before (moving more quickly) or is it just that more places are hiring? Also wondering about the timing of the job postings, and if things are going to slow down soon, or if we're still going to see twice as many jobs posted in October as in August or September! Where is my crystal ball...
