Can someone explain to me why the price of books differs so dramatically?
I had a lot of sticker shock when I went to buy this one:
Understanding Family Change and Variation: Structure, Conjuncture, and Action
which cost over $100.

books that are printed by vanity/trade presses tend to cost significantly more as they are produced for a much smaller audience (i.e. a few libraries).
books through Springer are a primary example.

Try living in Canada. Even though the exchange rate has been pretty much equal for the last 5 years, we still pay 20% more on all our books. Scam
