The main purpose of this thread is to log notes from the moderators explaining why some posts might have been edited or deleted. In the past, moderators have included these in the thread containing the original posts. An unfortunate side-effect, however, is that this leaves an artifact of the conflict within that thread, possibly prompting others to investigate what the problem might have been. For example, a moderator's comment that we shouldn't research and discuss a VAPs credentials might encourage others to do exactly that.
In the future, posts will be deleted with a note looking some like this:
After a short time period has passed — so that interested parties can see why there were no follow-ups to the post — the note in the original thread will disappear.
The notes here won't make reference to any specific thread, institution, or individual. Instead, they might look something like this:
or
Feel free to discuss, disagree with, or comment on the comments made here by the moderators, but keep it meta: don't make any reference to the original thread, institution, or individual involved in the original conflict. (Posts violating this request will also be edited or deleted without any explanation.) Hopefully, this thread will not have to be used very often.

When an applicant is considering multiple offers, it isn't appropriate to say or speculate where those offers might be from. This applies even if the applicant isn't explicitly identified: the "other" schools might not be aware of these competing offers, so this constitutes unnecessary interference with an individual's career at a particularly delicate period of negotiation.

It is wonderful that this forum is responsibly mediated in a way that can help to quickly protect people from such potentially negative influence on the negotiation process (or any other aspect of our careers). This is a genuine and I imagine unrecognized and time-consuming service to the discipline. Thank you for taking it on.

I also like the moderated decorum on this board. Professional reputations are at stake, and besides, those who just want to troll and muck around can always find a home on econ job market rumors, aka the home of unsocialized, Hobbsian man.

I know we prefer a lighter touch with regards to moderation, but I have recently deleted a couple of posts and moved another one from a "New Positions of Interest" thread that were (1) presenting incorrect links to an institution's handbook, and (2) raising larger issues that would derail an ongoing conversation with a faculty member. (We rarely get this perspective or information from "the other side," so I wanted to remove some of the errant noise based on faulty data.)
I think this forum works best when the "New Positions" and the "Status" threads stay on topic and focus on the particular position being considered, while the "Misc Job Market Discussions" deal with more global issues related to the discipline, the academy, the economy, . . .

If there's a desire to discuss differences between Canadian and US job markets, academies, standards, analytical approaches, etc., please create an appropriate thread in the "Misc. Job Market Discussions" section.

Personal attacks will be deleted (unless they are discussing something that is in the public record).

Once again, it is against the rules of this forum to question a hire's credentials for a job.

Just a friendly reminder: the "hires" threads are not appropriate venues for venting. For every announced hire, we all know that there are dozens (if not hundreds) of disappointed applicants. If these threads start to become filled with kvetching or second-guessing or just plain inhospitable comments, we're likely to discourage others from sharing such information in the future.

Unless there is something in the public record, do not accuse specific individual institutions or persons of conducting sham searches or being inside hires.

Please note: the threads in this "meta section" are reserved for information or discussions about this forum. They are not invitations to continue litigating any issues that resulted in moderation, and there is little tolerance for petty snark or insults made to disparage a fellow anonymous poster. Focus on the content of the arguments made, and don't make your comments personal if you expect the administrators of this board to take you seriously. This thread in particular exists to archive moderation decisions, providing others an opportunity to disagree with (or affirm) such decisions or to make arguments about how a situation should have been handled differently. If you want to make moderation requests, do so in the cleverly named "Moderation Requests" thread. (I moved a few posts from here to there.)

did posts get deleted from the "offers" thread? If so, what was the reasoning.

No posts were deleted from the "offers" thread, at least not by administrators. Registered users can delete their own posts, however, but I don't see any of those in the logs for the "offers" thread, at least for the last month or so.
