The Provost of the University of Washington has launched a major effort focused on Data-Driven Discovery, with a commitment to hire several new faculty in this area. In support of this effort, the Department of Sociology is seeking an assistant rank or an associate rank candidate for one tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the University of Washington. The position will be a full-time appointment in Sociology. The position will include participation, including teaching, in the UW eScience Institute as part of the appointment.
We encourage applications from exceptional candidates who can address the initiative’s goal of conducting cutting-edge research on methodologies for data driven discovery and who will help provide teaching and outreach to place advanced methodological tools and techniques into the outstanding core of researchers at the University of Washington. The substantive sociological areas of interest and research are open, but successful candidates will likely be developing methodology that leverages large-scale data for sociological research. We expect candidates to have a strong commitment to both research and teaching. Experience with on-line course development and/or hybrid teaching is desirable but not required. The position will be open to individuals at either the assistant or associate level; appointments as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applicants must have earned a PhD by the date of appointment. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
The Department of Sociology is located on the main Seattle campus, as is the eScience Institute. The Department has a history of collaborative ventures, enabling cross-department and interdisciplinary collaborations and initiatives.
Applications should include a letter of application, complete curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching interests, and the names of at least four references. Electronic submissions of candidate materials as one pdf file should be e-mailed to socjobs@uw.edu. Applications received by May 26, 2013, will be given priority consideration. Open positions are contingent on funding.
The University of Washington was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility in 2006. In addition, the University of Washington is a recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the participation of woman in academic science and engineering careers. We are building a culturally diverse faculty and encourage applications from women and minority candidates. The University of Washington is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
