I'm applying for a NSF grant for the first time. I've talked with others (including my advisor) but I do not know anyone who has ever applied to NSF. It's not very clear on the site (or on additional documents), so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has had experience applying for a NSF grant. What are the first steps to applying? Do I need to submit a Letter of Interest (LOI) through Fastlane? Should I just prepare/submit a full proposal? I've talked with the grants office at my institution, and they don't seem to know either.

As far as I know, in most institutions all grant applications are made through these offices, and they can help you out with that.

No LOI required, but it is a lot of paperwork -- for you and for your advisor (who acts as PI). If your sponsored programs office isn't helpful, that means more work (and frustration) for you. Try also calling the program officers for Sociology. They are helpful and interested in getting more people, from a range of universities, to apply.

There is a very strict format to follow when you write an NSF grant (I was a recipient a few years ago). Be sure you talk to someone at OSP and/or another student in your department that got it and can share insights into the format.

Does anyone know about when folks who applied for the October DDIG deadline might find out if they got it?

Whats going on with soc DDIGs this year? The last few years people seemed to be notified in December. Its basically February now, and the next deadline just 2 weeks away, so if one was hoping to try again with review feedback if they don't make this round, that ship has all but sailed too.
Anyone else apply, or have inside info or a student who applied?

The panel met a while ago to make recommendations on what proposals to fund, and some decisions are out. I know someone in my department was awarded one from the Oct round recently (last week).
Log into Fastlane and see if your reviews are accessible there, and/or contact the program officers to see if they can tell you the decision on your proposal and give you your feedback.
This does seem to be late to be making notifications but I imagine sequestration and the uncertain budget situation is complicating NSF's own budget future.

I didn't realize notifications didn't come out all at once. Congrats to your friend!
