I just received an email from Iowa asking me to upload writing samples. I thought at first that maybe I had simply failed to include them, but it looks like they initially didn't ask for them. I'm not sure if this qualifies as requesting more material or if they are asking everyone (and if you already uploaded writing samples as part of the optional materials section perhaps they won't need to contact you).
The process of uploading was a little disconcerting because I had to temporarily remove the application from consideration in order to edit, with warnings about how I would no longer be under consideration. Then the website timed out when I hit the final submit button. As far as I can tell it all worked out in the end, though.

Just logged into their system to check it out and I uploaded 3 writing samples under "supporting application materials." Not sure that that process looked like when I did it though.

Yep, I got the same letter. I did not include writing samples initially because they were not part of the requested materials.
And yes, to add these, you have to open your online app for editing, insert the sample(s) in "supplementary materials," write a note about what you changed in the app, and re-submit.

As I suspected, this isn't a particularly strong indicator. I think when I initially submitted the site did have the supporting materials area but it was listed as optional and the job posting didn't specify writing samples: "online application should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, name and contact information of references, and statement of research agenda." I suspect many people just went ahead and submitted writing samples. After all, with electronic submissions why not?
Meanwhile, it appears that resubmitting my application generated new emails for my reference writers even though they had already uploaded letters. Luckily I don't have grumpy letter writers.
For those interested in any scrap of info, the email did mention: "The search committee will begin reviewing the samples on Monday, October 8th." Who knows whether this is a first or second round of reviewing applications.

I applied to Iowa and did not receive a request for writing samples - so, this may mean something after all. I've noticed (and heard from insiders) that they only hire people from top departments, which would not be me, so perhaps they started with an easy cut.

I applied to Iowa as well, and have heard nothing. I'm hoping that they're going down their list alphabetically and that I'll hear from them later today, but I doubt it.

Did any of you have publications that they could easily find online? I'm wondering if they are only requesting samples from people who don't already have published works on their CVs.

I do have publications that they could have found online, as well as working papers on my personal webpage.

someone brought this up on another thread and it is a great question.
Is all of this discussion for the criminology call or the broader search (gender, race, family, etc.)?

It was for the broader search, the non-crim job.
