The Minnesota Population Center (MPC, http://www.pop.umn.edu) is a leading developer and provider of large-scale quantitative social science data. The MPC seeks to fill three openings for researchers (research fellow or research associate) to conduct research, investigate data issues, and participate as members of the IPUMS-CPS, IHIS, and/or ATUS-X research teams, respectively. IPUMS-CPS is a project dedicated to expanding and improving access to the Current Population Survey extending from 1962 to the present. The IHIS project is a harmonized set of data and documentation based on the U.S. National Health Interview Survey. The ATUS-X is a collaborative effort with researchers at the University of Maryland to reduce the barriers to using time diary data from the American Time Use Survey, which has been fielded annually since 2003. You may find more information and links to these MPC projects at ipums.org.
Responsibilities:
Each research fellow or research associate will play a leadership role on IPUMS-CPS, IHIS, or ATUS-X, assisting in the coordination of day-to-day project activities. Main activities will include investigating data quality and data comparability; developing systems for making data and documentation quickly and easily
accessible; and working with investigators, technical staff, and other senior researchers to design new website functionality for the project. The research fellow or research associate will edit variables and sample text for clarity and accuracy, develop solutions to data problems, and supervise staff carrying out
related tasks. Specific duties include: documenting variable comparability issues, analyzing data, developing variable coding schemes, editing HTML, supervising graduate and undergraduate student staff, and developing specialties in selected subject areas as needed. Additionally, successful applicants will collaborate with the PI and other MPC investigators on methodological developments and analytic issues, outreach activities, integration and documentation work, and grant writing to extend the project
into new research and training areas. The researchers may work collaboratively to support other MPC projects, as needed.
In addition to project-specific duties, researchers at the Minnesota Population Center conduct grant supported research in population studies and are expected to participate intellectually in the life of the center with faculty, other researchers, and graduate student members. These activities may include: writing and submitting grant proposals; preparing and presenting data to co-workers and co-investigators; presenting research findings at workshops and conferences; and authoring (or co-authoring) reports, conference papers and publications.
These positions will report to the project manager or senior supervisor and will collaborate with principal investigators, other researchers, and IT staff. The positions may supervise graduate research assistants, post-doctoral associates, and other project staff.
Qualifications:
Required: For Research Fellow, applicant must hold a master's degree or A.B.D. status (completed preliminary exams). For Research Associate, applicant must hold a Ph.D. at time of appointment. Applicant's degree must be in a social science discipline (e.g., sociology, economics, history, geography). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills. Demonstrated mastery of at least one major statistical software package (SAS, Stata or SPSS). Research experience using one of the IPUMS databases or any other large-scale census or survey data.
Preferred: Academic work in a population-related field. Experience collaborating with academics and technical staff in a diverse, interdisciplinary environment, especially with supervisory responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to learn new information technology as required. Familiarity with a programming language (or advanced knowledge of SAS or Stata syntax) and/or Unix. Experience with HTML/XML.
