Hi there --
Who is holding interviews at ASA not through the employment service?
Thanks!

My understanding is that depts aren't officially "holding interviews" outside the ES; instead, some people from departments with job openings might meet informally with potential candidates, usually because the student's advisor or other key person contacted a friend in the possibly-hiring dept to say, hey, meet with my student.
But what do I know? This is my first time out.
Also, sorry if the above is incoherent.

I've got a few with some good R1s. I've had some professors contact other R1 search committee chairs on my behalf and they said they were not going to do informal interviews at ASA this year.
Gotta get your network to work for you.

I have a michigan interview too. Would be interested to know which other R1 schools do that?

It seems like they all do it. I had three or four of them last year. As above, its a network thing. Contact the departments you are interested in if you dont have an adviser that knows someone the department.

Michigan seems to be pretty organized about it. At least me contacts are more like "see you at ASA" without setting up a clear appointment and the implicit understanding that both are going to be at a certain session or the session I am presenting at. According to my advisor, these are pretty useless anyway. But I have no idea...

Second time marketeer here. I've done plenty of these and not once have they led to an on campus interview. I've also gotten interviews at R1s that did hold these at asa, but not with me. This is like everything else: it may matter and it may not.

^ One other thing. These can also be good as sometimes the person you met with feel obligated to follow up with you after. If you don't get the invite, they may actually tell you why, for example.
