RESEARCH FELLOW
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
The Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR) is seeking an energetic and talented post-doctoral research fellow to work on a national study of environmental influences on behaviors associated with overweight among youth. Work would focus on the ongoing national study Youth, Education, and Society (YES), (see www.yesresearch.org ), which is in its 14th year of continued funding, and is part of the Bridging the Gap research program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The social environments under study are American secondary schools. The post-doctoral research fellow will work with the interdisciplinary faculty of the YES program to assess the relationship between characteristics of American secondary schools and individual health outcomes including physical activity, nutrition and obesity. Data on policies, practices and programs of relevance are collected from nationally representative samples of about 600 middle and high schools annually. The student outcome data (e.g., BMI, nutrition) is from the large annual Monitoring the Future surveys of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders (see www.monitoringthefuture.org ). The post-doctoral research fellow will be responsible for developing manuscript ideas, creating analysis plans and performing statistical analyses, authoring and coauthoring manuscripts and policy briefs, and presenting at national conferences. The Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research is a unique, world-renowned social science research center that conducts investigator initiated, survey-based research on theoretical and applied problems of both social and scientific importance (see www.isr.umich.edu/src/). Scholars will have exceptional resources to facilitate research including access to administrative, research and computer support staff.
Qualifications include a PhD in a related discipline: psychology, sociology, social psychology, epidemiology, economics, public health, policy, nutrition or medicine. Requires a good knowledge of quantitative data analysis techniques, survey methods, and demonstrated knowledge of the obesity literature, in particular in the area of nutrition and physical activity environments. Excellent written communication skills are necessary, as well as an ability to work collaboratively and constructively as a member of a research team. Salary range of $55,000-60,000/yr plus benefits and travel funds. Applicants should submit a letter describing their scholarly activities, any funded research, and their plans and interests. Please include a CV, names of (but not letters from) three references, and two recent publications or papers. Applications will be reviewed as they are received until the position is awarded. The targeted start date is early summer 2012. Please send all application materials and inquiries electronically to: nprieur@isr.umich.edu.
