FACULTY POSITION IN SOCIOLOGY
Truman State University
Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a term faculty position in Sociology to begin August 2019. The successful applicant has the possibility of reappointment for up to three additional years (9-month contracts), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.
Responsibilities: Provide classroom instruction in lower and upper division curriculum; fulfill additional faculty duties including mentoring of students in research and other experiences; and providing service to the University and community.
Required Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. in Sociology; ABD status (with Masters in Sociology) will be considered with Ph.D. completion scheduled by December 2019.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
• academic qualifications,
• compatibility with department needs,
• teaching background or the potential for teaching introductory sociology, social problems, global sociology, and advanced seminars,
• teaching background or the potential for teaching courses in an interdisciplinary programs such as environmental studies or disability studies,
• evidence of teaching effectiveness, including potential for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills in undergraduates,
• evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, including but not limited to interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, experience supporting diversity and inclusion, and
• strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Compensation and Rank: This is an entry-level academic position with $41,000 salary; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.
Program: Sociology is located in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Justice Systems that is part of the School of Social & Cultural Studies. The department has 9 full-time faculty members and approximately 120 undergraduate Sociology/Anthropology majors and 90 minors. The department also offers courses in Truman’s core curriculum.
